Have you ever wondered what fish you were looking at during a dive? The PADI Fish Identification Specialty helps you recognize and identify the most common fish families found on coral reefs.
You’ll learn practical fish identification techniques, fish behavior, and how to distinguish between similar species. This specialty adds a whole new level of enjoyment to your dives and helps you better understand and appreciate the marine environment.
Start with PADI eLearning before your trip so you’re familiar with the basics before getting in the water. You’ll learn how to recognize common fish families, observe behavior, and use shape, color, markings, and movement to help identify marine life.
🕒 Time commitment: 2-3 hours
During two training dives, your instructor will help you identify local reef fish and understand more of what you’re seeing underwater. You’ll practice observing fish behavior, recognizing key features, and identifying common species found around Roatan’s reefs

Roatan’s clear Caribbean waters, healthy reef systems, and abundant marine life make it an excellent place to learn fish identification in real dive conditions.
Here’s why Roatan is ideal for Fish ID training:
At Octopus Dive School, we help you see more on every dive, not just swim past the reef. Our instructors know Roatan’s marine life and will teach you how to recognize common fish families, observe behavior, and identify key details in a relaxed, practical way.
The PADI Fish Identification Specialty helps you understand what you’re looking at underwater. Instead of just noticing “colorful fish,” you’ll learn how to recognize patterns, shapes, markings, and behaviors so every dive becomes more interesting and connected to the reef around you.
